Use Turnitin to check an individual student's submission

If you'd like to use Turnitin to check an individual student's paper, you'll need to create a Turnitin assignment in Blackboard and have the assignment NOT display in the course or in the Grade Center.

1. When you are within your course, create a Content Area that will NOT be displayed to students.

1.1. Go to the course menu on the left side of the screen.

1.3. In the Name field, type a name for this section and click Submit.

Do NOT check the box next to "Available to Users" because you don't want students to have access to this area.

2. Click on the name of the new content area you just created. You can locate it at the bottom of the list of menu items for students.

3. Hover your mouse over the Assessments menu and click "Turnitin Assignment."

4. In the "Assignment title" field, type a name for this assignment and click Submit.

5. When the message appears that the Turnitin Assignment was successfully added, click OK.

6. Upload the student's paper that you want to be checked by Turnitin.

6.1. Click "View/Complete" for the assignment you just created.

6.2. Type in a first name, last name and submission title.

7. Hide the Turnitin assignment item from students in the Grade Center.

Turnitin automatically creates a column in the Grade Center when you create a Turnitin assignment and students will see this "assignment" when they click on "My Grades." If you don't want students to see this column, the remaining steps describe how to hide that column from students.

7.1. In the Control Panel area, click Grade Center and Full Grade Center.

7.2. When the Grade Center appears, you may need to drag the scroll bar to right to see the last column where your new Turnitin assignment will appear.

7.3. Click the down arrow to the right of the assignment name and select "Hide from Students."

Once the column is hidden from students, a circle with a red slash will appear to the left of the assignment name.
